RISE UP
It’s Mother’s Day and early this morning I read a newsletter from Heather Cox Richardson that spoke to the origins of Mother’s Day or Mothers’ Day dating back to the 1870’s. It’s a fascinating read and it nudged me to write this letter because I’m a guy who can’t just sit back and let time move forward without saying —something. I’ve linked the above sentence in the event you’ll be eager to read it and find the story as relevant as I do.
Rise Up is a poem in my new book called Cultivate Curiosity which has a theme about our common struggle for human rights and the trauma caused by lack thereof. And today, I dedicate it to Mothers’ Day.
RISE UP
Rise up
We are the women
of a just and fertile world
Rise up
We are the men
who honor women
Rise up
We are the subject
scorned and battered unafraid
Rise up
We are the disenfranchised
poor and hungry not hating
Rise up
We are the community Beloved
brilliantly diverse and bold
Rise up
We are the future leaders
gen Z to infinity
Rise up
We are the Earth-keepers
calling all planetary healers
Rise up
Rise up
Rise up
Rise up
Rise up
The importance of its message is that we, as a society, are quite capable of solving our differences and problems if we are given the tools to do so. The tools necessary for us in today’s world include curiosity.
Time to wonder and ask questions. Time to expand our reading sources and experience “things” outside our immediate radar.
And time to develop open minds and open hearts so we learn willingness.
We have to be willing to be the men who support women. We have to be willing to be the voice of the marginalized and we have to be willing to foster positive change.
Many times, it requires us to move outside of what we know.
In a world with so much information, it can feel overwhelming. With news headlines, hoops to walk through for healthcare, aggression, bullying, fear, war and so on… I truly believe for all of us —it means we need our time to reflect and process. Time to slow down, take a walk or a hike in nature, to hear. Time to sit alone for a few hours to think about what matters most to us. Then we can make better and informed choices.
“We are the community beloved, brilliantly diverse and bold” —RISE UP.
We have the capacity to live in healthier ways. But we need each other. We need you! Bring all your gifts with you to the table too, because the world sure does need them.
Be well and know there is hope even in unimaginable circumstances.
Happy Mothers’ Day!
I plan to record the poem RISE UP soon, maybe set it to music. Just a side note, no pun intended :) and if you are interested in the book, here is a little info on that.
