The link to the newsletter below may be one of the most important I’ve read from Heather Cox Richardson. I’m also certain I say that about most of her work.
The author begins by quoting NPR.
I found it necessary to read and reread as I do with anything of depth and importance just to allow the facts to sink in. This war, the other war, all war is by natural accordance to our planet —interconnected. The history of complexities is enormous, the reality horrifying, and chance of resolve though seemingly non-existent —not impossible.
War is senseless and itself, self-defeating. True.
And I wonder if we’re to continue viewing our personal positions as non-negotiable, are we then to become, have become our own biggest existential threat?
Meaning, we point to “them” when “them” is us.
Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking told us aggression would be the downfall of civilization. Yet, his final analysis was that empathy could course correct it because it embraced our common good.
Together, we make up the common good.
If our seeming divergence from acceptance of our multicultural world could re-emerge to demonstrate in a brief and poignant moment of togetherness as we do in events of natural disaster, maybe with our best effort we could also demonstrate that together we can achieve our most common goal —the human right to live free and equal, in peace.
That’s one helluva of a sentence never mind goal but still—not impossible.
It could be imagined more advantageous to obliterate the power behind our divisive protagonists rather than each other. For what’s that power reinforcing our division anyway but a belief and understanding of our choice to obliterate or consecrate?
